The game’s library of clips features rehearsals, rushes and full scenes from all three of the films, plus table reads, behind the scenes footage and more, and the player gets to navigate them frame-by-frame in their own time, gradually piecing together bits of what becomes a creepy and brilliant treatise on the nature of filmmaking itself. A sort of visual detective novel, the player (perhaps ‘director’ is a more accurate term) is tasked with exploring the story of Marissa Marcel, a fictional actress who first came to prominence in the late 1960s but made only three movies (all unreleased) before disappearing in mysterious circumstances. It is important to point out that while searching through the videos, the player is ultimately looking for a motive while also discovering what happened.Like Sam Barlow’s previous games Her Story and Telling Lies, Immortality uses live action video, which players can spool through at their own pace and in their own order, to tell its story. It is not a guided journey yet the game is still intuitive. The story will unfold base on what you look for.
Explore the database by typing search words or terms, watch the clips where those words were mentioned and then piece her story together. Game starts when you log in to an old computer from 1994 watching video footage of an interview with the young British woman being asked questions about her missing husband. Years later you are given access to the tapes that still remain as evidence for the case. In 1994 the main character Hanna Smith reported her husband missing to the police. It is a narrative driven experience that is heavy on mystery and intrigue. Her Story is unique and it is gaining popularity because it tells a story in a completely new way. Her Story is an indie adventure– simulation game developed and published by Sam Barlow who was known for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle.
